The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) convened an internal claims conference on June 3, 2025, to address the issue of out-of-pocket payments, or copayments, under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The conference brought together senior management, directors, and staff to identify the root causes of copayments and devise strategies to eliminate them, improve claims management, and enhance the overall efficiency of the scheme.
Key discussions centred on identifying system gaps, leveraging data analytics, and optimising provider reimbursement, to ensure that members access quality healthcare without financial hardship.
The NHIA’s Chief Executive, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to transparency and accountability, while the Deputy Chief Executives and other officials emphasised the importance of claims payment, stakeholder engagement, and education in streamlining the claims process.
The conference concluded with actionable recommendations to inform policy decisions and drive meaningful change, including proposed strategies to optimise copayment structures and improve access to healthcare services.
