The Deputy Director of Policy at the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Mr. Asante Gyebi, has stressed the importance of strict screening procedures before individuals are granted licenses to own firearms.
Speaking on Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem programme, Mr. Gyebi explained that prospective gun owners must undergo comprehensive mental health and drug screening tests. According to him, only individuals who are found to be mentally fit and free from substance abuse will be considered for firearm ownership.
He noted that applicants who successfully pass the screening process are then taken through extensive firearms training, where they are educated on the safe handling, storage, and responsible use of guns.
Mr. Gyebi emphasized that individuals who are found to have mental health challenges or drug addiction problems will be disqualified from obtaining firearms licenses. He explained that the measure is intended to ensure public safety and prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands.
He further stated that proper training helps authorities develop confidence in licensed gun owners, assuring them that the firearms will be used responsibly and will not pose a threat to the owners, their families, or the general public.
According to him, responsible gun ownership remains a critical component in promoting peace, security, and safety within communities.
