Accra, August 5, 2025 – Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s Ministry of Health and financial planners to reframe their approach to healthcare, urging them to treat it not as an economic burden but as a key driver of national development.
Speaking at the 2025 Africa Health Sovereignty Summit, Mahama stressed that health investments are crucial to building inclusive, productive societies.
“Health is wealth,” he said. “We must stop viewing healthcare as an expense and instead recognize it as a tool for job creation, inequality reduction, and national dignity.”
He challenged economists to re-evaluate how national accounts are measured, proposing that health be considered a productivity multiplier. This, he argued, would unlock more sustainable funding and drive innovation in healthcare systems.
The summit convened experts, policymakers, and partners across Africa to discuss strengthening health sovereignty and ensuring health investments deliver wider economic and social benefits.
