The Volta River Authority (VRA) has issued a public notice directing all persons occupying its lands at Akuse, acquired for the Kpong Hydro-Electric Power Project, to vacate the area immediately or face forceful eviction and demolition of unauthorized structures.
According to the notice signed by the Chief Executive of the VRA, Edward E. Obeng-Kenzo, the affected lands, covering approximately 17,491.82 acres (7,082.43 hectares), are located at Kpong, Senchi, Fodzoku, Torgorme, and Akuse.
The Authority explained that the lands were compulsorily acquired by the State under the State Lands (Kpong – Site for Hydro-Electric Power Project) Instrument, 1979 (E.I. 22), later amended by E.I. 35 of 1980, and subsequently reaffirmed by the State Lands (Kpong – Site for Hydro-Electric Project) Instrument, 2021 (E.I. 248).
VRA further stated that under Section 27(3) of the Volta River Development Act, 1961 (Act 46), as amended, the lands vested automatically in the Authority following their acquisition and therefore remain under its control and custody.
The Authority stressed that all persons currently occupying the lands without authorization are doing so unlawfully and have been directed to leave immediately.
It warned that anyone who fails to comply with the directive will be forcefully ejected, while all unauthorized structures on the acquired lands will be demolished in accordance with the law.
The VRA urged all affected occupants to heed the directive to avoid enforcement action.
“By this publication, the Volta River Authority wishes to NOTIFY all persons occupying the said lands to VACATE same with immediate effect. Failure by any such persons to VACATE their unlawful and unauthorized occupation of VRA Lands at Akuse will leave VRA with no option than to forcefully eject such persons and demolish all unauthorized structures on any portion of the lands in accordance with law”
