The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has called on Ghanaians to embrace moral renewal, national unity, and collective responsibility as the country observes the maiden edition of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.
Delivering an address at the ceremony held at the Centre for National Culture in Koforidua on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the Minister urged citizens to reflect on the nation’s journey, reset their priorities, and commit to building a future anchored on righteousness and prosperity.
“Our Republic Day, July 1st, has transcended being merely a public holiday. From this year, it is now established as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving to spiritually anchor our country in righteousness,” she declared.
Speaking on the theme “Reflect, Reset, and Renewal for National Prosperity,” Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey noted that the observance was instituted at a time when the world faces growing uncertainty, making it necessary for Ghana to realign its national values and purpose.
“Renewal is what will propel us towards sustainable prosperity – not only material wealth but peace, equity, and wellbeing for every citizen, regardless of background. Fellow citizens, I believe this sacred assembly is not just ceremonial, but transformational. Let our prayers today be not only words but seeds of action. Let our thanksgiving be the fuel that ignites our duty to one another and to the generations that follow”.
.
The Minister emphasized that the theme’s call to reflect urges citizens to recount the nation’s triumphs, challenges, and overlooked blessings, while the reset aspect requires recalibrating national values such as justice, honesty, integrity, and collective responsibility.
She called on Ghanaians to confront systemic challenges, particularly corruption, and foster inclusive development.
“This National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day Observance calls on us to do more than just pray; we must also take action to rid our systems of corruption, increase transparency, and steer toward inclusive development”.
The Eastern Regional Minister underscored that renewal remains the ultimate goal — a revival of the nation’s moral, social, and spiritual strength, necessary for sustainable prosperity.
Quoting Isaiah 40:31, she reminded the gathering of the promise of renewed strength for those who wait upon the Lord, urging citizens to allow their prayers and thanksgiving to translate into practical action.
“Let our prayers today be not only words but seeds of action. May our thanksgiving fuel our duty to one another and to generations to come,” she urged.
The Minister also charged Ghanaians to rise from the day’s observance with a sense of duty, committing to strengthen education, modernize agriculture, empower the youth, and protect the nation’s future.
“May this day stir in us a renewed sense of unity and moral clarity, so that together we may build a nation blessed not only with resources but with righteousness,” she concluded.
The maiden National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving was instituted by President John Dramani Mahama and is expected to be observed annually to unite the nation in gratitude, reflection, and collective renewal.
Head of Clergy Apostle Yaw Adu commended President Mahama for the initiative stating that it will reset the minds of Ghanaians to fear God in their endeavors which will go along way to deal with most menace the nation is confronted with.
Alhaji Yusuf Amudani , Eastern Regional Chief Imam said the observation will strengthen unity the exist between Christians and Muslims.
