A student of University of Ghana , identified as Hanson Baah, popularly known as Armani, has reportedly gone missing at a galamsey site at Akyem Okyinso in Kwaebibirim municipality of Eastern Region.
The student reportedly drowned in the River Birim while allegedly on his way to join a group to engage in illegal mining activities.
The incident happened on Saturday August 16,2025 .
According to eyewitnesses, the young man attempted to cross the river but was swept away by the strong current.
Local residents and volunteers have since launched a search to recover his body, though efforts are yet to yield results.
Meanwhile,three Chinese nationals engaging in illegal mining have been arrested, and two excavators seized in the community.
The operation was led by the Kwaebibirem Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Nti, in collaboration with the Kade District Police.
