Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has voiced reservations about the choice of some NPP flagbearers to participate in religious and ethnic politics.
He claims it is concerning that they would choose a flagbearer for their party in an internal election by going off on that tangent.
This was revealed by the former vice president on Sunday, August 24, 2025, while speaking to party members.
“As we go into the primaries, I am very concerned and troubled that some of our presidential aspirants have embarked on religious and tribal bigotry and propaganda against me. In a desperate attempt to win votes, they totally ignore the data and findings on why we lost the 2024 election and want to mislead delegates and the party wings with such propaganda,” he said.
Since the facts does not support his assertion, he could not understand why an aspirant would persuade delegates to reject him just because he is Mamprusi and the Kusasis will not vote for him.
“An aspirant has said delegates should not vote for me because I am a Mamprusi man and that I will lose votes in the Kusasi and other areas. This is very unfortunate and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the situation,” Bawumia revealed.
Such stories shouldn’t be allowed to thrive in our body politics, the former vice president said, adding that they are merely an effort to deflect attention from the real reasons why the party lost the 2024 elections.
His remarks follow Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s assertions that the party lost in the conflict-prone Bawku area because of his tribal heritage.
