Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya recently stated in an interview that it would take him no more than two rounds to eliminate UFC superstar Conor McGregor, if the two of them met in a boxing match.
“Two rounds,” De La Hoya said to CBS Sports’ State of Combat podcast.
“Oh come on, brother. Two rounds. One thing about me is I went for the kill, always. Look, Conor McGregor — I love him in the Octagon, I respect him, I watch him all the time. But the boxing ring is a whole different story; it’s a whole different story.”
McGregor made his boxing debut in August of 2017, when he facing a returning Floyd Mayweather at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
In the early rounds, McGregor did well – but he was broken down and stopped in the tenth round.
De La Hoya was highly critical of that fight and felt Mayweather intentionally carried McGregor for the pay-per-view fans.
After being advised of De La Hoya’s prediction, McGregor took to social media and stated – “I accept your challenge, Oscar De La Hoya.”
In the last few months, McGregor has voiced his motivation to return to a boxing ring. The fight with Mayweather was a massive financial success. The pay-per-view generated over 4 million buys – which is the second highest number in combat sports history.
De La Hoya, a Hall of Famer and six division world champion, walked away from the sport in 2008, after suffering a one-sided TKO defeat at the hands of Manny Pacquiao.
De La Hoya’s day to day to day focus has been on his promotional company, Golden Boy Promotions.
