Board chairman of the National Sports Authority, DR. Fred Awaah has backed the Black Stars to annex the 2026 World Cup title.
The West African football heavyweight kick-started their World Cup campaign with a narrow win over Panama last Wednesday, thanks to Caleb Yirenkyi’s last-gasp strike.
The Black Stars were pushed to their limits by a determined Panama side in Toronto, but the team showed resilience, composure and character to claim a 1-0 victory in a match that appeared destined to end in a goalless draw.
Substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante sparked the decisive move with a rapid counterattack before delivering a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area. Arriving at exactly the right moment, Yirenkyi calmly slotted the ball home to send Ghanaian supporters into wild celebrations.
In an interview with Koforidua-based Swiit FM, Fred Awaah expressed confidence in the ability of the Black Stars to win a major international trophy and restore Ghana’s football glory.
“We’ve started the tournament well and we hope to maintain our winning streak as we push to bring the trophy home. In football, results matter most, and fortunately for us, the boys delivered the result against Panama. We are going for gold, and nothing can stop us, regardless of the teams in this tournament”
“The players are beginning to understand each other better, and the cohesion within the team is improving. We hope this growing unity will be reflected in our matches against England and Croatia. We are aiming for victories in both games, and the boys are mentally and psychologically prepared.”
“As Ghanaians, we need to keep the team in our prayers. Spiritual support is an important part of life, and football is no exception”
Ghana will face England in their second Group L clash on Tuesday before taking on Croatia in the final game as competition for knockout stage spot heats up.
