KUKURANTUMI — The Eastern Regional Police Command has officially closed down the Kukurantumi Police Station and withdrawn all personnel following a violent attack on the facility by enraged youth, after the alleged death of a suspect in police custody.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, September 21, 2025, stems from the alleged brutal assault of a young man identified as Bright Kena, popularly known as “B Boy,” by a police officer identified as Officer Fumador. B Boy was reportedly beaten while in custody and later died at the Community Hospital, where he was receiving treatment under police guard.
News of his death sparked outrage among residents, leading to a coordinated attack by some youth in Kukurantumi. The attackers stormed the police station and adjoining barracks, pelting stones and other objects, and allegedly attempted to set the facility on fire.
According to a press release from the Ghana Police Service, the Inspector-General of Police ordered the immediate shutdown of the station and the removal of all stationed personnel to prevent further escalation.
A timely intervention by the Eastern Regional Reinforcement Team from Koforidua, supported by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Charles Darko Yeboah, managed to calm the situation. However, two members of the reinforcement team reportedly sustained injuries during the operation.
The Eastern Regional Police Command has since assured the deceased’s family and local leaders of a thorough investigation into the matter. Both the Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have launched parallel investigations into the circumstances surrounding B Boy’s death.
Video footage from the attack on the police station is currently being reviewed to identify and apprehend those involved in the violence. The Command has urged the public to seek lawful channels in addressing grievances and warned against acts of vigilantism.
The press release was signed by Superintendent George Peprah Mills, Staff Officer for the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Eastern Region.
