Ghana’s Black Starlets have booked their place at the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco after a commanding 2-0 victory over rivals Nigeria in the semi final of the WAFU Zone B Championship at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro.
The win not only sealed qualification but also set up a grand finale clash with hosts Ivory Coast on Sunday a repeat of their earlier group stage encounter, which the Ivorians narrowly won.
The Starlets came out with intent, pressing high and creating early chances. Narbi Joseph went close, while Robhino Gavi Yao forced a smart save. The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute when John Awule finished off a flowing team move to put Ghana in front. Just ten minutes later, Yao doubled the lead with a spectacular curling effort after a clever assist from Kagawa Mensah.
Nigeria responded strongly, but Ghana’s goalkeeper Solomon Kwame stood tall, pulling off two brilliant saves before halftime to keep his side ahead. Joseph nearly added a third but was denied on both occasions.
In the second half, Prosper Ogum’s boys showed maturity beyond their years, switching to a compact shape and hitting on the counter. Kwame remained decisive, producing another crucial stop in the 80th minute to protect the two goal cushion.
With this impressive performance, the Starlets have silenced early doubts after a slow start to the tournament. Now, just one step away from lifting the WAFU B crown, Ghana will be eager to avenge their groupstage defeat and shine again against the Ivorians in Sunday’s final.
