The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has pledged the commitment of the Regional Coordinating Council to support the newly inaugurated Eastern Regional Command of the National Signals Bureau (NSB) in Koforidua to effectively combat illegal mining, armed robbery, and drug-related crimes in the region.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to commission the Command on Wednesday, 8th October 2025 in Koforidua, the Regional Minister described the establishment of the modern.
infrastructure as a major boost to the region’s intelligence and security architecture.
According to her, the NSB’s new facility will enhance surveillance, intelligence gathering, and coordination with sister security agencies in addressing emerging threats such as cybercrime, cross-border crime, and environmental destruction from illegal mining.
“The incessant illegal mining activities, armed robbery, and illicit drug use continue to threaten the region’s security,” Hon. Awatey noted.
She added “We acknowledge the significance of the NSB and will commit the needed resources to ensure its effectiveness. As Chair of REGSEC, I assure you of our continued support and collaboration in maintaining public safety, peace, and security.”
She commended the Bureau for its pivotal role in safeguarding national sovereignty and internal peace, adding that the new regional office will provide a conducive environment for officers to deliver on their mandate more efficiently.
The National Signals Bureau, established under Act 1040 of 2020, is mandated to provide integrated signals and communications security systems for national security and intelligence agencies to safeguard the State.
The Minister also advised staff of the Bureau to uphold a strong maintenance culture to preserve the newly inaugurated facility and equipment for long-term use.

On his part, the Minister for the Interior Hon. The Minister said the facility, one of four regional offices to be opened this year, has access to a network of more than 10,000 CCTV cameras nationwide, which allows for real-time intelligence gathering and coordination among security agencies.
“Signals intelligence allows the NSB to lawfully intercept, analyze, and interpret these digital communications.It is a powerful tool that helps our security agencies to track the movements of kidnappers, dismantle networks of fraudsters, pre-empt armed robberies, and disrupt the activities of transnational criminal organisations. It moves us from reactive security to proactive prevention”
The Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Dr. George Atta Boateng, explained that the Bureau is expanding its regional presence to protect citizens and enhance cybersecurity and surveillance systems.

He, however, cautioned that the Bureau will come after individuals who use social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook to spread misinformation or incite violence.
The National Security Coordinator, COP Osman Razak, urged the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to work closely with the Bureau to act swiftly on intelligence gathered to combat crime.
