The Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by Hon. Matthew Nyindam, Member of Parliament for Kpandai, has called on the government to address growing concerns surrounding the operations of the Telecel Group in the telecommunications sector.
Addressing journalists, Hon. Nyindam revealed that the Chief Executive Officer of Telecel Group was recently in the country, reportedly making concrete efforts to finalize arrangements that have raised serious questions among stakeholders. He noted that these actions appear to be aimed at strengthening the company’s position and winning goodwill from government officials.
According to him, Telecel has recently partnered with the government on several public initiatives, seemingly to attract attention and support from the Presidency and other key decision-makers. As part of these efforts, the company collaborated with the Ministry of Health to support the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as Mahama Cares. Through this partnership, Telecel donated cervical cancer screening equipment to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, with similar donations expected at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and Sefwi Wiawso Government Hospital in the coming days.
Hon. Nyindam cautioned the Telecel Group against any attempt to acquire strategic state assets through unlawful, opaque, or irregular means, warning that such actions would not only lack legitimacy but would also attract severe consequences in the future. “The people of Ghana, and the next NPP government, will not sit idle while a vital national asset is handed over under questionable circumstances,” he stressed.
He reminded the company that state assets belong to the people of Ghana and must not be used for political or personal gain.
The MP further called for a comprehensive parliamentary inquiry into the terms and circumstances surrounding the proposed consolidation of Telecel’s operations in Ghana. He urged Parliament to review all correspondences, reports, and advisory recommendations related to the transaction to ensure full transparency and accountability.
