The Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation and former Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma West Constituency, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially announced her intention to contest the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a heartfelt message shared on her Facebook page to mark her birthday, Hon. Owusu-Ekuful addressed fellow party members—whom she affectionately referred to as “Patriots”—and reflected on the party’s recent struggles, while offering a vision of renewal and unity.
“A lot of water has passed under the bridge since our stormy face-off with ourselves and our base,” she wrote. “We came out bruised, our individual and collective egos battered. We are not in a good place.”
Despite these challenges, she expressed strong optimism in the NPP’s capacity to rebuild, invoking the spirit of resilience that has defined the party since its founding in Saltpond.
“Though scathed, we refuse to be consumed. Even if we must walk through fire, we shall emerge—shaped, moulded, and like the Phoenix, rise and be ready.”
Hon. Owusu-Ekuful criticized the current caretaker NDC government, accusing them of misleading Ghanaians with false promises and contributing to a loss of faith in the NPP. However, she called on party members to regroup from the grassroots up—starting at polling stations through to national leadership—to restore unity and public confidence.
“This government isn’t in power because they were preferred. They got there through deception. But we will revive belief in our party.”
She urged the NPP to use the period leading up to the 2028 general elections to re-organize and present itself as the credible alternative Ghanaians need.
“December 2028 is not far off. The people of Ghana will be crying out for change, and we must be ready to answer that call with unity, purpose, and bold leadership.”
Declaring herself a “fighter you have always known,” she formally asked for the support of NPP members in her bid to become the next General Secretary of the party.
“I come to you in all humility to ask you, dear Patriots, to join me on this rescue mission… This remains my resolve. This remains the resolve of the NPP. And I know—with unity, with God, and with the will of the Ghanaian people—we shall overcome.”
Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful’s declaration adds significant weight to the race for General Secretary, bringing with her years of experience, a strong national profile, and a passionate appeal for party renewal.
