Former President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has advised all New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidates to focus issue-based campaigning and maintain a respectful tone as the party prepares for the 2019 presidential primaries.
Speaking during a breakfast meeting at his own residence in Nima, Accra, on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the former President emphasized the significance of a clean and courteous race.
He invited the five candidates for the NPP’s presidential nomination, as well as prominent party leaders, in an effort to foster unity and party cohesiveness ahead of the primaries on January 31, 2026.
The purpose of the conference was to strengthen the need for a united NPP as the party attempts to regain power in the general elections of 2028 and to foster a sense of brotherhood among the candidates.
Akufo-Addo praised the candidates for coming and acknowledged their dedication to the future of the NPP. He emphasized that each candidate had distinguished service to the party and the country, and he encouraged them to run on the basis of ideas rather than personal assaults.
He added that maintaining party unity and the legitimacy of the primaries were his top priorities.
The five presidential candidates responded by personally promising that their campaigns and supporters would act honorably and avoid using divisive methods. In order to maintain party unity, they also promised to back the ultimate flagbearer following the primaries.
The meeting was also attended by former Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey, and NPP Council of Elders Chairman Hackman Owusu-Agyemang.
Ken Ohene Agyapong, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum were among the candidates present.
