The Eastern Regional Police Command has issued a stern warning to the public that no weapons or live ammunition will be permitted at this year’s Odwira Festival in Akropong in the Akuapem North Municipality.
According to the Command, the directive forms part of comprehensive security measures to ensure peace and safety during the festival, which climaxes today, Friday, October 24, 2025, with a grand durbar of chiefs and people of Akuapem.
In a statement signed by Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, Eastern Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, the police emphasized that all forms of weapons are prohibited at the durbar grounds and within the Akropong township throughout the celebration.
The statement also made it clear that no live ammunition shall be fired at the durbar grounds or anywhere in the municipality, warning that violators will face the full rigours of the law.
“All persons officially sanctioned to fire musketry shall be properly tagged and identifiable at all times,” the statement noted.
The police have also restricted the movement of motorbikes beyond the Old Assembly Junction in Akropong. Designated parking areas include the Audit Service premises and the Old Court premises.
For effective traffic management, the Command has earmarked Shoe Fabrique, Municipal Assembly, Dachie Junior School, Christ Church Park, and the Old Court premises as official parking zones for vehicles.
The statement further advised that all traditional activities heralding the Odwira Festival, such as the visit of Amaprobi to bring the Odwira, should be conducted during daytime to ensure adequate security coverage.
The Police Command also urged commuters heading to Koforidua and beyond to use the Ofankor–Pokuase–Nsawam and Dodowa–Somanya–Adukrom routes to avoid traffic congestion along the Ayi-Mensah–Aburi–Mamfe stretch.
Supt. Tetteh assured the public of heavy police deployment across Akropong and along the highways to maintain order before, during, and after the celebrations.
“Our presence will be felt day and night to ensure that everyone goes about their activities in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. However, anyone found breaching the peace will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
The Odwira Festival, celebrated annually by the Chiefs and people of Akuapem, is one of the most prominent traditional festivals in Ghana , drawing thousands of celebrants from across Ghana and abroad.
