Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has officially declared his intention to contest the position of National Chairman in the party’s upcoming national executive elections.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Mr. Afoko stated that his decision followed “extensive reflection and encouragement” from well-meaning members, supporters, and stakeholders of the NPP. He described the move as a response to consistent calls for renewed leadership rooted in the founding values and democratic ideals of the party.
According to him, his commitment to the NPP has remained steadfast over the years, and the time has come for him to contribute once again to the rebuilding and strengthening of the party at a crucial moment in its history.
“This decision has not been taken lightly,” he emphasized. “It comes after careful consideration and in response to calls for leadership that upholds the NPP’s democratic traditions. My focus is on a future where our party stands re-energised, inclusive, and better positioned to deliver on its promise to the Ghanaian people.”
Mr. Afoko acknowledged that the party’s journey had not been without challenges but maintained that his priority had always been the unity and progress of the NPP. He pledged to lead with integrity, transparency, and a renewed sense of purpose.
In the coming weeks, he said, he would engage broadly with NPP members and the media to share his vision, ideas, and plans for the party.
“Let us look ahead together,” he concluded. “God bless the NPP. God bless our dear country.”
Mr. Afoko previously served as National Chairman of the NPP and was known for his calls for internal democracy and accountability within the party. His return to the political frontline marks a significant development ahead of the NPP’s internal elections.
