The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for New Juaben North, Hon. Samuel Adongo, has emphasized that the National Sanitation Day is not just a civic duty but also a national assignment that is compulsory for all citizens.
Speaking during a cleanup exercise at the Jumapo Market, Hon. Adongo reminded residents that everyone is expected to take part in the monthly sanitation exercise. He cautioned that individuals who refuse to participate will be dealt with according to the law.
“Anyone who fails to take part in the sanitation exercise will be reported to the appropriate authorities. The law will take its course, and offenders will be summoned before the court,” he stated.
He noted that for the past five months, the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly has been organizing sanitation exercises, often preceded by public announcements to remind residents to join. However, he expressed disappointment that turnout for the current exercise was low despite several reminders.
Hon. Adongo further stressed that environmental health officers would issue warning letters to households and businesses that fail to participate. He cautioned that shops and other businesses that operate during the cleanup hours will face sanctions.
“The government expects all of us to come together to clean our surroundings. This will help eliminate filth-related diseases that continue to affect Ghanaians,” he said.
“Those who joined today’s exercise will be recognized and appreciated at the appropriate time,” he added.
The MCE also highlighted government initiatives aimed at improving living standards. He mentioned that President Jonh Dramani Mahama is committed to supporting the creation of a 24-hour economy, expected to begin next year, God willing.
Additionally, Hon. Adongo announced plans to construct a main lorry station and a central market for the New Juaben North Municipality within the next three years.
The Environmental Health Officer for New Juaben North, Mr. Daniel Kwaku Daako, also addressed participants. He reiterated that the sanitation exercise aligns with the President’s directive that every first Saturday of the month should be dedicated to national cleanup activities.
“We began these monthly exercises in July, and today marks the fifth one. We chose Jumapo because it is one of our busiest markets and a major source of revenue. We want to remind everyone that maintaining good sanitation is a personal responsibility and key to preventing disease,” Mr. Daako stated.
The exercise at Jumapo Market saw participation from assembly staff, traders, and residents, all working together to ensure a clean and healthy environment for the community.
