The Abuakwa North Municipality in the Eastern Region is witnessing significant developmental progress following the commencement of multiple key projects aimed at improving healthcare, education, and access to clean water.
Speaking at the various sod-cutting ceremonies, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Charles Darko, highlighted the importance of the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in strengthening Ghana’s primary healthcare system.
According to him, the new CHPS facilities will bring essential health services closer to community members, especially those in rural and underserved areas. He explained that the facilities will help reduce the distance residents travel to access medical care—an intervention that will greatly benefit pregnant women, children, the elderly, and people living in remote communities.
Hon. Darko further noted that the CHPS compounds will support the implementation of national health programs such as immunization campaigns, health surveillance, community outreach, and disease control initiatives.
Enhancement of Education Infrastructure
Touching on education, the MCE emphasized the importance of the newly commenced 6-Unit Classroom Block with Stores, Library, and Staff Common Room at Ati Amanfrom L/A Primary. He explained that the modern facility will enhance teaching and learning by providing a conducive environment with adequate space, ventilation, lighting, and seating.
He added that the library will help promote reading habits among pupils, offering access to books, digital resources, and research materials that support academic growth and independent learning.
Additionally, Hon. Darko highlighted the relevance of the staff common room, describing it as a vital space for teachers to undertake lesson planning, hold discussions, mark scripts, and share ideas. This, he said, will improve teamwork, professionalism, and overall school administration.
Improving Access to Clean Water
The MCE also underscored the importance of constructing boreholes and hand pump boreholes across the municipality. He stated that these facilities are crucial in improving water accessibility and promoting community well-being, particularly in rural areas.
Hon. Darko explained that boreholes provide reliable access to clean groundwater, reducing reliance on contaminated surface water and helping to prevent waterborne diseases. He added that hand pump boreholes will bring water closer to households, easing the burden on residents—especially women and children—who often walk long distances in search of water. With more access to clean water, he noted, hygiene practices within communities will significantly improve.
