The Department of Social Welfare and Development, under the auspices of the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, has extended a helping hand to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Eastern Region. In a bid to promote self-sufficiency and improve their daily lives, the Assembly recently distributed a range of essential items to support PWDs in setting up sustainable livelihoods.
A variety of equipment was shared, including sewing machines, fridges, industrial fufu machines, washing machines, T-shirt printing machines, and other tools designed to assist the beneficiaries in becoming more independent and financially stable. These donations are part of the Assembly’s ongoing effort to empower PWDs and provide them with the necessary resources to earn a living and contribute meaningfully to society.
During the event, Hon. Ransford Owusu Boakye, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for New Juaben South, addressed the beneficiaries, stressing the importance of taking good care of the donated equipment. He reminded the recipients that these items were not just handouts but tools to help them build a better future. He urged them to use the resources wisely, maintain them well, and create opportunities for themselves.
In his speech, Hon. Boakye also highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting PWDs. He referenced several initiatives launched by the President John Mahama administration, including free tertiary education, the National Apprenticeship Program (NAP), and the One Million Coders program. These programs, he explained, are designed to reduce unemployment, create more opportunities for PWDs, and help them achieve greater economic independence.
“Your well-being and empowerment are central to the vision of this government,” Hon. Boakye emphasized. “These initiatives, alongside the resources we are providing today, are part of a broader effort to ensure that persons with disabilities can live fulfilling, productive lives.”
The MCE’s call to action resonated deeply with the beneficiaries, who expressed their gratitude and commitment to making the most of the support they had received. Many of them shared their aspirations to establish small businesses and engage in entrepreneurial activities that would not only improve their livelihoods but also contribute to the local economy.
The event was a testament to the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly’s dedication to fostering inclusion and providing equal opportunities for all, regardless of their physical challenges. With the distribution of these life-enhancing tools and the backing of government programs, the hope is that PWDs in the region will find new paths to success and independence.
