A female police officer, whose identity is withheld, narrowly escaped death while on official duty after a gunshot was fired in her direction at Wassa Ateiku in the Wassa East District of the Western Region.
The incident occurred during a traditional ritual being performed by a clan to commemorate the 40 days and officially announce the death of their Abusuapanin.
Providing details of the incident, the Wassa East District Police Commander, ASP Yahaya Salifu, explained that at about 9:30 a.m., the police officer was stationed at a police checkpoint near a stream when members of the clan arrived to perform the customary rites.
According to ASP, in the course of the ritual, a gun was suddenly discharged, with the bullet travelling directly toward the police checkpoint where the officer was standing. The cartridge penetrated a mounted barricade, and it was only the presence of a tricycle and a motorbike parked at the checkpoint that prevented the bullet from hitting the officer.
