K.K Sarpong has revealed that he opposed the New Patriotic Party’s decision to elect a presidential candidate ahead of restructuring its leadership after the 2024 elections.
Responding to questions about the post-election direction of the party, Sarpong said he did not support the approach that had been approved.
“No. I opposed it,” he stated in an interview on Metro TV. “I didn’t like it.” He explained that, in his view, choosing a flagbearer before resolving internal leadership arrangements creates complications.
“We elect the candidate, he comes in, and all the people around him are of the old position,” Sarpong said.
“You have to go and come back.” According to him, the traditional approach allowed the party to prepare its structures first before settling on a candidate.
“That has always been the position,” he noted. Despite his reservations, Sarpong acknowledged that the party had already made its decision and there was little room to reverse course.
“There’s an election on 31st January,” he said. “We can’t do anything about it. That’s what the party has decided.”
