Koforidua, Ghana — A security consultant, Dr. Mettle Nunoo, has cautioned Ghanaians against the casual handling and illegal possession of firearms, stressing that guns are not ordinary commodities to be treated like farm produce.
He made these remarks during an interview with Kwamina Sam Binney on Bryt Adekyee Mu Sem, where he spoke extensively on the growing concerns surrounding infiltration of small arms in the country.
Dr. Nunoo explained that, there are clear law governing the acquisition and possession of firearms in Ghana, but many citizens remain ignorant of these regulations.
He emphasized that ignorance of the law is not an excuse, noting that several people possess firearms without registering them, which constitutes a criminal offence.
According to him, some individuals even own locally manufactured guns, raising serious questions about how such weapons are acquired and circulated within communities.
He, therefore, called for intensified public education to ensure that citizens understand the dangers and legal implications of illegal gun ownership.
Dr. Nunoo urged all gun owners to submit their weapons for proper registration to support the government’s reset agenda and strengthen national security.
He warned that individuals who refuse to comply or caught with unregistered firearms will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He further appealed to the public to adopt the right mindset regarding gun ownership and to follow the appropriate legal channels when seeking to acquire firearms, stressing that this is essential for building a safer and more secure Ghana.
When asked by the host about the percentage of locally manufactured guns compared to foreign firearms circulating in the country, Dr. Nunoo stated that it is currently difficult to determine accurate figures due to the high level of illegality and the unknown number of weapons that have entered the system.
