Eastern Regional Director for the National Youth Authority, Evelyn Enyonam Lotsu, has urged parents to start sex education with their children at early stage in their lives.
Speaking to Bryt Adekye Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney, she asserted that children already pick up information about sex from their peers by the age of 6-8.
“When parents last had open discussions about sex education with their children, many parents avoid these conversations, assuming their children are too young, while they are already learning from their friends”, she stated.
She continued by saying that youth today follow trends because everyone wants to gain more social media followers, and as a result, mother-child relationships have vanished. Additionally, social media has replaced family time in modern times. when parents are glued to their phones and fail to check in on each other’s day. Good family time is being ruined by social media.
“Parents should definitely take note of this. It is time for us to start listening to our kids. We ought to let them in. Inform them of the risks associated with specific deviant behaviors and the consequences for themselves. Children choose and act upon any information they come across on social media if that isn’t done, which is quite risky”. She added.
