Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, has advised politicians not to politicize issues regarding homosexuality.
He however addressed remarks allegedly made by well-known televangelist Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh regarding the current national dialogue surrounding LGBTQ issues.
Politicians should refrain from politicizing the issue, according to Rev. Dr. Tetteh, who cautioned that trying to come across as “politically correct” could turn off people who actually care about the nation’s cultural and religious values. He emphasized that the wellbeing of the populace must be taken into account, pointing out that traditional authorities, religious leaders, and cultural guardians have strong opinions on the matter.
“I am appealing to our politicians not to politicize homosexuality. If we are not careful, in our attempt to appear politically correct, we may end up offending people who genuinely care about us. I always say that those who love you should not be hurt. Let us consider the welfare of the people and recognise that not only the religious community, but also traditional authorities, our culture, kings and chiefs, hold strong views on this matter. We must approach it thoughtfully to avoid a repeat of what happened previously,” he said.
In a sharp rebuttal, Ntim Fordjour insisted that LGBTQ issues have never been politicised in Ghana.
“When did LGBTQ issues become political? If we don’t take care, very soon, when we (Pastors) say ‘praise the Lord,’ we won’t get anybody to respond ‘hallelujah.’ Nobody is doing politics with it. We are only asking the President to fulfill his promise,” the Assin South MP stated during a one-on-one interview on the Platform program on Peace FM.
