The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has responded to recent comments by former presidential aspirant and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, regarding the status of the Afari Military Hospital project.
Mr. Ahiagbah said he had received numerous requests to comment on Mr. Agyapong’s assertion that the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration did no work on the hospital project during its eight years in office. While acknowledging Mr. Agyapong’s reputation for speaking candidly and expressing his views without reservation, Mr. Ahiagbah suggested that the former lawmaker may not have had access to the full facts surrounding the project’s progress when he made the remarks.
According to the NPP Communications Director, the Afari Military Hospital project was approximately 40 percent complete when the Akufo-Addo administration assumed office in January 2017. He stated that by January 7, 2025, the project had reached 98 percent completion under the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
Mr. Ahiagbah outlined the project’s status at the time of the government’s handover, indicating that civil works on the core hospital structure were 97.5 percent complete as of September 2024, while architectural works stood at 87 percent completion. He added that road construction and landscaping components were 80 percent and 77 percent complete respectively.
He further claimed that the remaining work required to complete and operationalize the facility represented about two percent of the overall project and would cost an estimated $500,000.
Mr. Ahiagbah urged political actors to focus on factual information regarding the project, arguing that the current administration only needs to commit the necessary resources to complete the outstanding works and make the facility operational.
The Afari Military Hospital, located in the Ashanti Region, is expected to enhance healthcare delivery and strengthen medical services for military personnel and civilians when fully completed.
The project has recently become a subject of political debate following comments by Mr. Agyapong concerning its implementation and completion status.
