The Former Majority Leader and Member of the Council of State Hon. Cletus Avoka took Members of the Assurances Committee through constitutional and parliamentary basis of ministerial assurances which is focused on strengthening oversight through effective monitoring and reporting.
Hon. Avoka made the MPs aware of the legal implications of non-compliance of ministerial and parliamentary assurances.
For his part, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Nitiwul Bingab Dominic suggested that the Committee should come up with an Assurance Register where assurances made to Parliament by Ministers would be tracked and updated frequently.
“This is to be done to keep Ministers and Members of Parliament in check” he stated.
