The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private schools in the Yendi Municipality to allow students and staff to attend the funeral of the late Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II.
The directive, which went into effect at noon on Monday, July 13, will be in place until Thursday, July 16, according to a statement released by the GES on Tuesday, July 14. Full academic activities are anticipated to resume on Friday, July 17.
The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, the Northern Regional Director of Education, and the Gbewaa Palace were consulted before the decision was made, according to the Service.
The GES claims that during the period of sorrow, the temporary closure is meant to honor the late King and show respect for the customs and cultural legacy of the Dagbon people.
Additionally, it expressed confidence that parents, school administrators, and other stakeholders would comply with the directive and instructed all children and employees within the municipality to observe the mourning period.
Muniru Sogri, the chief executive of Yendi Municipal, had confirmed the decision to the media, stating that the closure was authorized by the government to allow locals, including the school community, to take part in events commemorating the Dagbon Overlord’s departure.
“Following the demise of the King of Dagbon, the Overlord, Yaa-Naa Abukari II, a decision was taken that to mourn the death of the King, public schools and also private schools have to close down,” he said.
