The Governing Board of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) have visited the proposed site for the construction of Ghana’s first manganese refinery at Nsuta in the Western Region.
The visit formed part of the Board’s working tour of key operational and industrial facilities with the potential to generate increased cargo volumes through Ghana’s ports, particularly the Port of Takoradi.
During the visit, the Board received a comprehensive briefing from the Ghana Manganese Company Limited on the proposed refinery, its implementation plans and its expected contribution to Ghana’s mining and logistics sectors. The refinery is expected to enable the local processing of manganese ore, moving the country beyond the export of raw materials and creating greater value within the domestic economy.
The project, which is expected to be completed within the next two years, is projected to create more than 5,000 jobs. It is also expected to increase the value of Ghana’s manganese exports, strengthen the country’s industrialisation agenda and position Ghana as a key producer of value-added manganese products for the global market.
Board members reaffirmed the Authority’s readiness to continue working closely with Ghana Manganese Company Limited and other industry stakeholders to ensure that Ghana’s port infrastructure remains responsive to the evolving needs of strategic industrial investments and capable of supporting increased trade volumes.
