Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, with a focus on building inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Political Forum in New York on behalf of the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Deputy Minister, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah (MP), outlined four priority areas: scaling up affordable and inclusive housing, strengthening integrated urban development and spatial planning, expanding urban infrastructure and local economic development, and advancing climate-resilient cities through stronger urban governance and data systems.
She noted that while Ghana has made significant progress in urban governance and institutional development, rapid urbanization and a housing deficit of over 1.8 million units remain key challenges. She emphasized that government will continue to work with development partners, the private sector, and local communities to deliver sustainable urban development for all.
