A local canoe carrying 25 passengers has capsized on the Volta Lake in the Afram Plains North District of the Eastern Region
One person has been retrieved dead while others are missing.
The passengers were returning from Dzemeni to Agalakope on Thursday evening but met a violent storm on the lake which capsized the canoe, according to the Donkokrom Divisional Police Command.
About 10 persons were rescued.
An 18-year-old boy who was part of the victims saved himself but attempt to save his 60-year-old mother Adjoa Ahilehe failed. She was retrieved dead.
A joint team of Police and NADMO could not progress with rescue effort due to poor visibility hence resumed the search for the other passengers together with local divers.
The body of the 60-year-old has been deposited at the Donkokrom Presbyterian Hospital Morgue.
Speaking to Agoo News’, Assembly Member for Anidzi Electoral Area Hon Raphel Kporxa, gave a different account of persons on board the canoe.
He said, there were two boats which embarked on the journey but the one carrying about 50 passengers conspicuously did not reach the destination ” so they were tracing to find out whether something is going on the lake. Before they got there about eight people gone in the water, and when he finds out the number of people on board he was told they were about 50 passengers.
“Immediately one dead body was found, the rest were in the lake so I put heads together with the opinion leaders including the chief to send some people this morning to see whether we can find them”
He said, “On their way, the boat stopped working so base on that the water started coming in so the boat sank into the water following a heavy storm as at that time”. Hon Raphel Kporxa stated
According to him, the missing persons are two males, five females.
