Following the passage of the Public Holiday Amendment Bill into law in March 2019, Ghanaians are marking the Second edition of Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day is today.
The day was previously celebrated as “Founder’s Day”.
September 21, mark the 111th birthday of the country’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame.
He was credited for the construction of Tema Township, the Accra-Tema Motorway, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the University of Cape Coast, as well as many polytechnics and second cycle educational institutions across the country.
The President, Nana Akuffo Addo, therefore, proposed legislation to Parliament to designate 4th August as FOUNDERS DAY, and 21st September as KWAME NKRUMAH MEMORIAL DAY, both of which will be observed as public holidays. In the meantime, the President has issued an Executive Instrument to commemorate this year’s celebration of KWAME NKRUMAH MEMORIAL DAY as a public holiday.
Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo has revealed that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who was Ghana’s first President will be honored as a leader who also contributed immensely towards the attainment of independence for Ghana.
