The District Chief Executive for Okere Daniel Kenneth has advised teenage girls in the district to desist from posting obscene photos on social media.
According to the DCE, many young ladies on social media have reduced themselves to” sexual attractions” to trend or get more likes.
He said the phenomenon is worrying.
“Today when you log in to any social media platform, you see that many young women have reduced themselves to sexual attraction and it has become the norm. Decently dressed women get few likes but ladies who almost show their nakedness get the most like sometimes 2000 likes therefore many young ladies have joined this bandwagon and have reduced themselves to be sexual objects”
The DCE said this when addressing young girls at the “Girls Take Over” event organized by Plan International Ghana at Dawu Akuapem to mark International Day of the Girl Child which falls on October 11.
Nana Akua Tia, Mawerehemaa of Akuapem Apirede said social media has both advantages and disadvantage, therefore, advised that young girls use the digital space to their advantage to learn, network, do business, connect to the world.
She said “young women must display their knowledge on social media instead of their nudity “
She also advised young women on social media to be vigilant so that they do not fall prey to the hands of prolific extortionists who have flooded the internet space.
Meanwhile, stakeholders at the event called on the government to facilitate the enactment of Anti-Cyber bullying Law to protect women and girls in particular from increasing cyber violence.
A 15-year-old girl was made the ceremonial District Chief Executive for Okere to mark International Day of the girl child celebrated globally on October 11.
The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child is “my voice, our equal future “.
The DCE for Okere Daniel Kenneth relinquished his position to Henrieta Ametepe a student of Mintakrom D/A Junior High School for 24 hours to act as DCE
