The High Court in Tanzania has ruled that a terrorism case against the country’s main opposition leader can go ahead as planned, dismissing objections by Freeman Mbowe’s Chadema party.
Defence lawyers argued that the court’s Corruption and Economic Crimes Division – where Mr Mbowe appeared – had no powers to hear the case.
The opposition leader was arrested last month shortly before he was due to hold a public forum to demand constitutional reform in Tanzania.
His supporters have described the charges as politically motivated and accuse police of torturing Mr Mbowe.
