Farouk Al-Wahab, an international diplomat, has described the Government of Ghana’s decision to evacuate its citizens from South Africa as an important and necessary measure to protect lives amid rising tensions.
Speaking on Bryt FM’s “Bryt Adekyee mu Nsem” programme, Mr. Al-Wahab said any government has a responsibility to act when the lives of its nationals are under threat. According to him, if a country believes the safety of its citizens is at risk, it must take immediate steps to protect them.
He expressed concern over what he described as South Africa’s inadequate response to the situation. He said there has been little indication that the South African authorities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, are fully committed to resolving the problem.
Mr. Al-Wahab further noted that statements from South African leaders have been inconsistent. He explained that while President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged that South African citizens have the constitutional right to protest and make demands, some politicians have dismissed concerns raised by Ghana and other African countries, claiming they are “making unnecessary noise.”
According to the diplomat, such conflicting messages do not inspire confidence that the issue is being handled with the urgency it deserves. He therefore commended the Ghanaian government for prioritizing the safety and welfare of its citizens by taking precautionary measures.
