The Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda Alexander Akwesi Acquah who doubles as the vice chairman for the trade committee in Parliament in collaboration with Ghana Enterprises Agency, (GEA) has commenced the disbursement of Ghc3161,500 to traders affected at Oda market during September 13, 2021 fire outbreak.
Presenting a dummy cheque, the Chief Executive Officer of GEA, Mrs. Korsy Yankey Ayeh said the disbursement was at the behest of the President in line with the mandate of the agency to support macro, medium, and small scale businesses “so this has come at the right time after the agency was directed by the government to mobilize their support to the 599 market women who needed help to sustain their businesses”.
She further urged the beneficiaries to properly utilize the funds disbursed to them.
The Lawmaker Hon. Alexander Akwesi Acquah thanked President Akufo Addo for fulfilling his promise to the affected traders.
“As part of the president’s promise on the 7th October 2021 to the market women during his thanksgiving tour in the Eastern region precisely in Oda, MASLOG has already donated GHc 2,000 each to the affected market women and shop owners who runs small scale businesses in the Oda market. The ejection of over 4.2 billion cedis is a government plan and intention to seek to it that businesses in the market come back to life and to make sure economic activities continues in the Oda municipality”.
He believes the injection of 4.2 million cedis by the government through MASLOC and GEA would help businesses bounce back to stimulate the local economy, enhance job creation and revenue generation to the local assembly.
The MP further assured the market women and the people of Oda that a well-planned market with accessible roads linking the market will soon be constructed to ease the burden on these market women since investigations conducted shows that one of the causes of the inferno was lack of access to the market by the fire officers on the day the incident occurred.
