The Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly has handed over 600 student desks to the Ghana Education Service for distribution to basic schools in the municipality.
It brings to about two thousand (2000) the number of student desks distributed to basic schools in the municipality to fix the huge desk deficit.
According to Abuakwa North Municipal Chief Executive, MCE, Alhaji Umar Bodinga, currently, all basic schools in the Municipality have adequate desks for the pupils.
“There is no basic school from class one to class six in the municipality that has a shortage of desks. All the schools have been given desks in the Abuakwa North Municipality” the MCE said.
He said the intervention is part of an effort by the assembly to achieve a single-digit aggregate in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) this year.
No BECE candidate in public basic schools in the municipality has ever secured a single-digit aggregate since the establishment of the municipality in 2018.
One of the challenges identified by the Municipal Education Committee is inadequate desks in public basic schools which created discomfort in schools for pupils making them lose concentration on teaching and learning.
“MUEC identified three things -government responsibility, parents, and teachers. So I told them I have absorbed the government responsibility so will do the best to fix the problems which are the responsibility of government”
The MCE Alhaji Umar Bodinga told journalists that, hardworking teachers are also going to be motivated to ensure that the single-digit aggregate is achieved.
The Municipal Director of Education, Abena Gyamera told the media that, though the performance of the Municipality in BECE has improved marginally from moving 16th to 12th position out of 33 districts and Municipalities in the Region, the municipality is yet to achieve a single-digit aggregate.
She is however hopeful that with the interventions put in place, the single-digit target will be achieved from this year’s batch of BECE candidates.
She commended the MCE for the commitment to improving quality education in the municipality.
