Motor vehicle manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) has set eyes on Ghana as the gateway to its West Africa operations as it seeks to expand its footprints on the continent, says Martina Biene, chairperson and managing director of Volkswagen Group South Africa, who’s also responsible for sub-Saharan Africa.
Where Nigeria is failing, Ghana is standing out with a working automotive development policy that appeals to the German automotive giant.
Last March, VW opened a new vehicle assembly facility in the bustling Tema Free Zone enclave in Accra after two years of jointly running a facility with its licensed importer in Ghana, Universal Motors Limited (UML).
The 5,000m² new plant has the capacity for 5,000 vehicle units per year and will assemble the T-Cross, Tiguan, Amarok, and Virtus models.
“We consider Ghana as an important country when it comes to automotive hubs in Africa so we wanted to have our own factory here. We think Ghana can fulfil that role as an automotive hub for West Africa,” Biene tells The Africa Report.
