Member of Parliament for Yendi, Umar Farouk Aliu Mahama, has disclosed that most NPP MPs want vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be the party’s next flagbearer.
Dr. Bawumia stands out among the contenders for the NPP flagbearership, according to Mr. Mahama.
The head of the Muslim Caucus in Parliament claimed that although the other candidates are equally qualified, the vice president is the most equipped to take the nation to its goal because of his experience working with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“As for me and the majority of the Majority MPs, we are rooting for the Vice President, and it is a fact, and we are bold enough to say that we want Mahamudu Bawumia to take us to the promised land and also unite the party after the elections.
“Although we are yet to meet the other presidential hopefuls, it was clear during our meeting with the Vice President that everybody in the room wants Dr. Bawumia, and we are not saying that everyone wants him, but at least, over 100 MPs want him.”
Mr. Mahama went on to say that he is confident “that Bawumia will win [the presidential primaries] with over 80 percent of the votes.”
The Vice President announced his desire to run in the NPP Presidential Primaries on November 4, 2023, during a meeting with members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament on Tuesday, May 2.
He will compete against nine other candidates, including three-time candidate Alan Kyerematen, who quit in January 2023 to concentrate on his campaign for the presidency.
