Residents of Nsukwao, a suburb of Koforidua in the Eastern region has lamented bitterly about the $15.8 million Nsukwao Basin Drainage Project constructed by President Akufo-Addo government,under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme (GSCSP) in the New Juaben South Municipality.
The aggrieved residents bemoaned bitterly over the gutter since the day it was constructed.
Speaking to the reporter, residents complained that the construction of the Basin Drainage Project has rather increased flood cases in the community.
They indicated that “in recent downpours it started raining adding the Nsukwao Basin Drainage choked and it really caused damages and destroyed their houses”.
Residents are, therefore, pleading to the Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Constituency and Hon. Isaac Appaw- Gyasi, Municipal Chief Executive for the municipality to intervene and find solutions to the problem of perennial flooding.
President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, 4th August 2020, cut the sod for the construction of the Nsukwao Basin Drainage Project with its main goal being to improve urban management and basic urban services.
President Akufo-Addo noted that the New Juaben Municipal Assembly has identified flooding as a major risk to the lives and livelihoods of persons living in Nsukwao, Zongo, Two Streams, Abongri and other communities within the municipality.
President Akufo Addo explained that the Basin Drainage Project will deliver a storm drain that will minimize flooding in the identified communities at the cost of GH¢15,811,145.00, and packaged into seven (7) lots.
It was to install four (4) storm water surface detention ponds distributed along the Nsukwao River, flow facilities, channelization and streambank stabilization, concrete pipes and culverts and two access roads.
