About 77% of candidates who wrote 2022 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency failed.
The poor performance placed Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency (Akyemansa District) last but three in the latest BECE ranking in Eastern region during the year under review.
Performance of Candidates in BECE over the years in Ofoase-Ayirebi area has been very poor. In 2021 for instance ,4 schools scored zero percent during the BECE.
The District Girl Child Education Coordinator, Stephania Amissah Brikorang said the situation is worrying.
She said the high teenage pregnancy cases, absenteeism and and truancy among students in general are affecting performance in BECE.
She partly blamed parents for also not providing basic needs of their children rather allowing them to roam on men to fend for themselves resulting in early pregnancy.
Ofoase -Ayirebi constituency continue to battle high cases of teenage pregnancy over the years.
The area was number one in Eastern region in 2021 and second in 2022 in teenage pregnancy cases.
About 100 of teenage mothers are however struggling to get fathers for the children as men mentioned to be responsible have denied responsibility.
Some residents in Abenase community believe the only practical way to curb the menace is family planning interventions for teenage girls in the district.
Speaking at a community engagement by Ark Development Organization and UNICEF ,Twafohene of Abenase,Nana Kwasi Anim however believe economic empowerment of parents to be more responsible in providing the needs of their girl child would be a good step in protecting young girls from sexual predators.
Meanwhile three persons including a 64 year old who impregnated his stepdaughter have been arrested by Police in Akyem Akokoaso and Kwaboadi No.1 communities by Oda Divisional Police Command.
Executive Director of Ark Development Organization Emmanuel Kwarfo Mintah bemoaned that DOVVSU has no office at Ofoase Ayirebi whereas Oda Division Police command that has oversight responsibility in the area is incapacitated by lack of vehicles and logistics to operate.
