The Eastern Affairs Forum, a pressure group has raised concerns over the recent mass disconnection of water supply to five Senior High Schools in the Krobo-Asuogyaman enclave of the Eastern Region.
The affected schools—Krobo Girls SHS, Anum Presbyterian SHS, Anum Vocational Training Institute, Boso SHTS, and Akro SHTS—are grappling with severe water shortages, impacting both students and staff.
The disconnection was reportedly initiated by the Ghana Water Company Limited due to the government’s outstanding debts and the lack of a viable payment plan.
Despite the dire situation, the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has not intervened, exacerbating the challenges faced by the affected schools.
Long queues at limited water sources on the campuses have become a common sight, forcing students to venture outside their premises in search of water.
This not only poses security concerns but also raises questions about the well-being of the students.
The Forum believes teaching and learning have been significantly compromised as a result which will affect the preparations for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) by final year students if the problem not fixed immediately.
The Eastern Affairs Forum therefore calls for the urgent need for a resolution to prevent further disruption to the academic activities of these schools.
The forum is more worried “that students, particularly females, are compelled to wake up as early as 3 am to search for water, a practice deemed unsafe by the Eastern Affairs Forum”.
The Programs Coordinator of Eastern Affairs,Evans Srenyame, urges the Ghana Water Company Limited to prioritize the well-being of the students and consider alternative approaches to address the outstanding government debts.
The Eastern Affairs Forum has also called on the Nana Addo/Bawumia regime to promptly honor its financial commitments by releasing grants for payment of utility bills in second cycle institutions.
The forum strongly condemns the perceived disregard for the Eastern Region’s welfare and insists on immediate action to resolve the water supply crisis affecting these schools.
“we at the Eastern Affairs Forum wish to plead with the Ghana Water Company Limited to not be influenced by the ineffectiveness of the Nana Addo/Bawumia regime but consider the well-being of these students and reconnect the valves of water supply to these vulnerable students whiles alternate approaches to compel this lame government to pay the bills are explored.
We again wish to urge the incompetent Akuffo Addo/Bawumia government to honour the the payments due the Ghana Water Company Limited so they can be effective and efficient”. The forum said.
