DMAC Foundation, with support from Star Ghana and Botnar Foundations, marked the 2024 International Women’s Day in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region.
Themed “Invest in Women; Accelerate Progress,” the event convened various groups and organizations, including students, market women, assembly members, the media, and government officials.
Television presenter/producer and media consultant, Stacy Amoateng, delivered an address as guest speaker,emphasizing the importance of self-investment and perseverance for young women to overcome societal barriers hindering their progress.
She advocated for greater representation of women in leadership positions, suggesting that Ghana is ready for a female President.
Eastern Regional Director of the Department of Gender, Juliana Abbeyquaye, highlighted the significance of investing in addressing socio-economic and health barriers faced by women, emphasizing the role of the private sector in supporting such initiatives.
Nana Darteh Asamani Kumi, Kyidomhene of Okorase, expressed concern over the escalating cases of teenage pregnancy, which she believes jeopardize the future of many young girls.
The Executive Director of DMAC Foundation outlined various empowerment interventions for young women, particularly under the “Kofcity Youth We Dey Project,” a part of Star Ghana Foundation’s broader initiative, the “Our City Project.”
He said through the project, some young women contested and won the district level elections to push the interest of women and the youth at the assembly level.
Representing the Municipal Chief Executive for New Juabeng South, Ike Appaw Gyasi, listed programs such as Free Senior High Education and economic support interventions aimed at bridging inequalities and supporting the girl child and women in the country.
