On Sunday, April 7, 2024, the Eastern Regional Sub-Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rushed to the scene of a fire outbreak at the Koforidua Central Market after distress calls.
However, firefighters encountered a major setback as the pump failed to engage upon arrival around 6:10pm prompting them to resort to unconventional methods to combat the flames.
With local residents stepping in to provide buckets of water, firefighters valiantly battled the blaze, suspected to have originated from an electrical fault.
Despite the challenges posed by the malfunctioning equipment, the diligent efforts of the fire crew managed to prevent the fire from spreading extensively.
The inferno ravaged four shops within the market, completely destroying two and partially damaging two others.
The destruction included various items such as plastic cups, bowls, and spoons, takeaway packs, toilet rolls, and polytene bags. Despite the intensity of the fire, adjoining shops were spared from complete devastation.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries stemming from the incident.
Ultimately, through collaborative efforts, the fire was brought under control at 1826 hours and fully extinguished by 1845 hours.
Residents are however shocked over failure of the pump to function forcing firefighters to use buckets of Water to douse the fire.
