John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that if elected, his government will be completely transparent to the public.
Mahama emphasized the need of accountability for public office holders during a town hall meeting on Monday, August 12.
He said that those in positions of government work for the country and should be prepared to answer for their actions.
Any public official who misuses their position should expect to be held accountable, according to Mahama.
He was very clear in saying that instead of running for public office, anyone looking to further their own wealth should look to the private sector.
“If people want to come into government and make money then we can’t help you, go into the private centre, we will help you set up a cassava processing plant go and process cassava, employ young people, don’t and come and take public office.
“Once you take public office you must be prepared to be held to account,” he said.
While acknowledging the difficulties of bringing charges against members of his own party or administration, the former president emphasized how important it is to do so in order to maintain accountability and fight corruption.
