Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyenhene has expressed deep concern about the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining, which continues to threaten local ecosystems, biodiversity, and water bodies.
Akyem Abuakwa is one of the areas in the country experiencing massive destruction of the environment by illegal miners.
The Birim river is continuously polluted by illegal miners who mine directly in river using Chinese technology popularly known as changfai.
Speaking at a traditional durbar at Akyem Wenchi, marking his 25th anniversary on the Ofori Panin Stool, the Okyenhene cautioned the youth to refrain from engaging in illegal mining activities, stressing on the the need to protect the environment for future generations.
At the same event, Okyenhene advocated for equal opportunities in education, particularly for children in rural areas, to help them unlock their potential.
He also called for increased focus on women’s empowerment, noting that women have demonstrated prudence in managing resources.
The Oseawuohene, Daasebre Dr. Asumadu Appiah, in his report to Okyenhene, said, the Oseawuo division has successfully halted all illegal logging and mining activities within the Kwaebibirem enclave, aligning with efforts to restore and protect the environment.
As part of his dedication to education, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has constructed ten model schools across the Akyem Abuakwa State.
The Amoatia Ofori Panin Model School at Akyem Wenchi,wih nine classrooms, a computer laboratory, ICT centers, and a staff common room, was commissioned before the durbar.
