Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation Ghana (MoCD) on Wednesday, 10th October 2024 held a training session to sensitize its staff on the Right to Information (RTI) Act 989.
The event was aimed at enhancing understanding of staff on the act and its implications for public service.
The Director of the Research, Statistics and Information Management (RSIM), Dr. Samuel Antwi-Gyekyi, who welcomed the facilitators of the training on behalf of the Chief Director, Mr. Alexander Yaw Arpul, and the Information Services Department’s Right To Information Division (RTI) for their continuous engagements with all Stakeholders on the RTI ACT
He emphasized the importance of the RTI Act in promoting transparency and accountability within public institutions. He encouraged staff to actively engage with the presentations and ask questions to better understand their roles under the law.
The Deputy Chief Information Officer of the Information Services Department (ISD), Madam Genevieve Mawuena Wutoh, presented an overview of the RTI Act 989, highlighting that citizens have the right to access information from public institutions.
However, she said certain information were exempt from disclosure, particularly sensitive information meant for the president, cabinet deliberations, law enforcement, and matters affecting national security.
She stressed that it was vital for staff to know what information could be shared and what must remain confidential to protect public interest and national security.
The second speaker, also a Deputy Chief Information Officer(ISD), Mr. George Frimpong Basoah, focused on the procedures for requesting information and the fees associated with accessing it.
He explained that when individuals make requests for information, they may be required to pay a fee, depending on the nature of the information sought.
In attendance were staff of the MoCD and some Service Personnel of the Ministry.
