The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Akim Oda Constituency has raised serious concerns about the deteriorating state of the Oda Government Hospital, accusing local leaders of neglecting the facility.
According to the NDC, a promise to renovate the hospital made four years ago remains unfulfilled, leaving the hospital in poor condition and unable to meet the healthcare needs of the community.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party revealed that a local NGO, AYIPEY FOUNDATION, had expressed interest in renovating the children’s ward of the hospital and providing essential medical equipment.
However, the project was allegedly halted by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Adwoa Agyeiwaa, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akim Oda, Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah.
The party claims that the justification for stopping the NGO was a promise from the government to handle the renovation. “It is disheartening to note that the same promise was made four years ago, yet the Oda Government Hospital remains in a very deplorable state, failing to meet the healthcare needs of our people,” the NDC said.
The statement also raised concerns over what it described as a potential conflict of interest involving the MP, who doubles as the Deputy Minister of Health.
According to the NDC, Hon. Acquah owns a private health facility in Akim Oda, the Community Hospital, which directly competes with the government hospital.
“Hon. Acquah owns a private health facility, Community Hospital, in Akim Oda, which competes directly with the Oda Government Hospital. As the Oda Government Hospital struggles to fulfill its mandate to the people, Community FM—a radio station operated by the MP—consistently criticizes the government hospital,” the NDC noted.
They claim that this creates an unhealthy narrative that undermines the public facility while promoting the private hospital owned by the MP. “The people of Akim Oda deserve to know why promises remain unfulfilled while urgent healthcare needs are unmet,” the statement added.
The NDC is calling on the government, the MCE, and the MP to be transparent about the stalled renovation projects and put the health and well-being of the residents first.
“We urge our leaders to set aside personal interests and work together to prioritize the health and well-being of the people,” the NDC’s Akim Oda Communication Officer, Benjamin Agbesi, said in the statement.
The party emphasized its commitment to advocating for quality healthcare for all residents, stressing the importance of transparency and collaboration in ensuring the Oda Government Hospital can effectively serve the community.
