Two illegal miners have died while one seriously injured after a mining pit collapsed on them at Akyea Kukubi a community in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The deceased have been identified as 28-year-old Solomon Kumi, a native of Akyem Bomso, and 32-year-old James Mummuni Naaba, a resident of Akyem Asuom.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, December 19, 2024.
The corpses have been retrieved by joint effort of other miners,police and National Disaster Management Organization,and deposited at the Kade Government Morgue for autopsy.
The injured victim is also receiving treatment at same hospital.
Illegal mining menace has serious worsened after the elections across the country. The Birim river and other major water bodies have been heavily polluted .
