Kofi Tonto, a prominent political figure and spokesperson for the Ruling NPP government , has made a serious allegation regarding the conduct of the just-ended parliamentary elections.
According to him, some returning officers were coerced into making illegal declarations of parliamentary results under duress, casting a shadow over the integrity of the electoral process.
Speaking on TV3 This morning , Mr. Tonto claimed that returning officers the disputed parliament seats were subjected to undue pressure and intimidation, which led to the announcement of results that allegedly did not reflect the true will of the people. He argued that these actions undermined the principles of free, fair, and transparent elections, which are the cornerstone of democratic governance.
“The electoral process has been gravely compromised. Returning officers were forced to declare results against their better judgment and under circumstances that violate electoral laws. This is a betrayal of the trust placed in them to ensure fairness,” Tonto stated.
He stated it is the reason Electoral Commission (EC)has re collated some result from the disputed seats and declaring the NPP parliamentary candidate as winners after the re collation.
The claims have sparked a wave of reactions from various quarters, with opposition parties and civil society groups expressing concern about the implications of such allegations. Some have demanded that the EC provide a detailed account of the processes leading to the declaration of results in affected constituencies.
